We are one church with multiple expressions, united by a shared mission: to make disciples for Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. We also are united in our values, ministry strategies, administrative leadership, and Wesleyan theology while embracing unique, contextual approaches to worship, preaching, discipleship, and outreach in each of our communities.

Unlike many multi-site churches that replicate the same sermon and programs across locations, we take a different approach. Our communities share administration, but each expresses ministry in a way that fits its context. Why? Because we believe we can make more disciples by being present in more neighborhoods and offering diverse pathways to faith.
What We Believe and How We Live It Out
At First UMC, our faith is rooted in historic Christian beliefs and shaped by the distinctives of the Wesleyan tradition—chief among them a deep trust in God’s grace, a commitment to personal and social holiness, and an open table where all are welcome. Guided by Scripture, our theological identity emphasizes love of God and neighbor, diversity of interpretation, and collaborative ministry rooted in our local context. We live out our faith through practices of generosity, leadership development, spiritual formation, and compassionate service to the world.
Our Leadership
The First UMC staff is composed of both community specific staff, as well as whole church staff who provide ministry support across all three FUMC communities. Our church is also faithfully led by congregation members who voluntarily serve on teams that direct the vision and mission of our church and fill essential ministry roles throughout our communities.
Our Story
First United Methodist Church has been part of Lexington’s story since 1789, growing from a small gathering in a cabin to one of the first hundred Methodist churches in America. With a long legacy of worship, discipleship, and leadership development, we now serve through three unique worshiping communities committed to making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
